Something I like to do as I travel around Asia is check out the local convenience stores.  They are usually filled with what I as a Brit would call odd things.  I think you can get a good idea of the local tastes and likes, as well as maybe trying a new thing or 2.   7/11 usually reigns as king but in Bali you have Circle K.
